Earlier this month, Nielsen Music revealed in its year-end report that Taylor Swift’s latest pop record Reputation had ended 2017 as the bestselling album. The title beat out the competition, including Ed Sheeran’s ÷ (Divide), which was named the biggest title of the year (including streaming and track sale equivalent copies, a change that was made a few years back by Nielsen), as Reputation was able to sell 1.9 million copies.
By doing so, Swift has now become the first artist in U.S. history to see three different records end at least one year as the bestselling title. That’s an incredible accomplishment, as she has now bested some of the greatest artists in history for this honor, and it points to not only how popular she is, but how long she has been in this position of power.
Swift first claimed the bestselling album of the year back in 2009 with her record Fearless. The release took her career to the next level and established her not just as the latest success story to come from the country world, but as a true star in her own right, and one who could outsell even the biggest names of her day.
A few years later, after releasing a handful of country albums, Swift’s first all-pop LP 1989 also ended a year as a bestseller. In late October 2014, she finally made the switch from country to pop, and by the end of that year, it had outsold everything else available.
Several artists—Elton John, Whitney Houston, Mariah Carey, Eminem and most recently, Adele—have all seen a pair of full-lengths end a year as the bestselling, and a few titles have even ruled for two years in a row (such as Michael Jackson’s Thriller and Adele’s 21), but never before has any musician or group seen three different titles win over the public’s affection (and dollars) in this way.
It is worth mentioning that Elton John almost achieved this feat several decades back, though Swift still has him beaten, if only technically. Two of John’s proper albums wrapped up years in the 1970’s as the bestselling, while in 1994, The Lion King soundtrack was on top when December closed. John wrote and produced songs for that collection (including some of the best-known from the title), but it wasn’t primarily his, as he only sings on three of the 12 tracks on the original release.
Swift will likely have some company when Eminem puts out another record filled with radio favorites or whenever Adele returns, but for the moment, she’s on her own. History will likely remember Ed Sheeran as the conquering hero of the 2017 charts, as Divide was the most-consumed, but when it comes solely to sales, there is still nobody who wins like Swift.
davepastern: The Ready for it... video was good (but I loved Ghost in the Shell so that was gonna always be a given lol), not really a fan of End Game (the song or video). Sorry, but it's my least favourite song on Reputation, and joins the ranks of a few other songs

davepastern: that I dislike (should've said no, better than revenge, holy ground, and style).

neoswiftie: no need to be sorry, wasn't my favorite song on reputation either, but I do love the video, especially the London sequence

neoswiftie: Hi StarlightDreamer, I'm not a member there... but I'm pretty sure some of our members are there too, I guess they prefer to be on both fora. Why do you ask?

neoswiftie: I don't mind that you promote your forum and everyone can join here and stay a member there too, I really don't mind, there is also taycon.proboards.com/ they were first

swiftvote: I've been here from the start... no drama like on TC or the new 'The Swift Life' app, I don't need another forum
Jan 16, 2018 7:37:49 GMT -5
swiftvote: I guess most swifties are now on tumblr and The Swift Life, but they are also chatting in 'private chatrooms', problem with those chatrooms is that 1 person has to approve who is allowed in, and who is allowed to stay, heard that there was drama there too.

neoswiftie: When there are a lot of members, doesn't matter where, you are gonna get drama... that's why certain topics are better avoided

neoswiftie: Here we have a safe place for everyone that loves Taylor for who she is, what she does without having to whine about the 3 things other 'huge' fora forbid... Po Ra Re, there are enough other places for those topics
Jan 16, 2018 7:46:23 GMT -5
swiftvote: Agreed, those topics are what causes the most misery on TSL
Jan 16, 2018 7:48:31 GMT -5
twothirtyam: I like TSL but you can't really connect to anyone, short conversations are possible on someone's post... but once you go somewhere else it's not possible to find it back
Jan 16, 2018 8:30:58 GMT -5
neoswiftie: Lol now they have a problem with Joseph Kahn, you know... the one friend who defended Taylor through thick and thin, you know... one of her REAL friends

neoswiftie: Because he said that pitbulls are dangerous, and I know he is exaggerating but what sane parent would leave his/her baby/todler alone with a pitbull? Just imagine a child who doesn't know how to behave around an animal, poking in it's eye... or worse!
Jan 16, 2018 11:14:50 GMT -5
neoswiftie: Some breeds have a bite and jaw that can kill, Joseph is not saying every pitbull would do that, just saying you never know what might happen, and if something happens what then?
Jan 16, 2018 11:17:40 GMT -5
neoswiftie: Is anyone on the TSL app? If so, did you get free packs and picks today or yesterday?
